Colorado Mule Deer Hunts

About:

Eastern Colorado is known for its trophy quality Mule Deer. Our deer have the genetics to reach well over 200”

in some cases. The trick is managing the herd for age class. In recent years age class and deer numbers have

slipped some due to increased tag numbers and CWD. For us, this means decreasing how many hunters we take

and focusing on age class over inches. We do our best to only harvest deer 5.5 or older. For the hunter this means

being patient and diligent waiting for the opportunity at a mature deer while maybe having to pass up a large

but young deer. We target bucks in the mid 150’s to 170’s and knowing that bucks up to 200” and above may be

in the next field. These hunts are vehicle heavy while most days are spent covering as much country as possible

glassing crp, crops, creek bottoms and rolling pastures looking for the right deer. Whitetails are legal to take with

a Mule deer tag and are an option for every hunter if the right buck comes along. Due to low populations, we

don’t offer a whitetail only hunt but do not pass up the opportunity to harvest one if the right deer presents

itself.

Rifle:

Tags take 0-1 points for non resident and 0 for resident

Early rifle hunts are a 5 day Hunt, Late rifle is a 6 day hunt. Lots of glassing and driving can be expected on these

hunts. Shots range from 100-400 yards.

Muzzleloader:

Take 0 points to draw

This is a 6 day hunt. This is a fun hunt for the guy or gal with the right attitude and physical ability. These hunts

take place in early October and can be a tough time of year for deer to be visible. This means we position

ourselves in the right areas early in the morning and late in the evening for the best opportunity at seeing the

right buck to hunt. Colorado has strict restrictions on muzzleloaders which makes shots rarely over 100 yards.

Archery:

Takes 0 points to draw

Also a 6 day hunt. This hunt can be an extremely rewarding one. Depending on the time of year when you hunt

whether that be early october, mid november or late december there are a lot of variables. Most archery hunters

know the challenge that archery brings and are well prepared for the mental and physical demands it takes to get

within ethical shooting distance of a mature mule deer.

This is a 3 day hunt. Spot and stalk style, hunters typically stay in Burlington and will be picked up by guide in the morning and drive anywhere from 10 minutes to an hour from Burlington to start hunting.

We usually look over multiple bucks a day until we find a mature buck we want to take. Bucks in our area top out around 70-75 inches and a typical buck will go in the low to mid 60s. This is a laid back hunt with a lot of time in the vehicle glassing as much country as possible until we find what we are looking for.

Muzzleloader:

Takes 0-1 points for Non Residents and 0 for Residents to Draw

This is a 3 day hunt. Spot and stalk. Hunters stay in Burlington or Bethune and will be picked up by a guide in the morning and driven to where they will start hunting that day.

This hunt is typically a bit more physical, lots of crawling at times and can be tough to get into effective range for an open sites muzzy. However, we have high success rates with the muzzleloader hunters. Expect a lot of driving and glassing for this hunt as well. Leaving a big buck because of where he is hanging out is common to find one in a better spot to stalk.

Archery:

OTC tags available

This is also a 3 day hunt. Archery hunts are primarily done by sitting over a water source or sometimes area where bucks have been crossing in a blind from daylight to dark. It is a mentally tough hunt but a rewarding one. Roughly a 50% success rate. Coolers with sandwiches and snacks will be provided as well as drinks. Bring a book to read or something else to pass the time.

In some instances spot and stalk may be an option however not common.
